Updated: May 13, 2020

When you find that your internet speed has begun to suck, you just blame it on your Broadband service provider, or for that matter your Internet Service provider. But, most of the times, we fail to understand that it could be the computer settings, an age old PC or even the hardware can be a culprit. Are you looking for the ways to speed up your internet connection speed by 50%? The tips we present here should help you increase your internet speed by 50% or even more!

There are several ways you can use to speed up your internet connection speed. However, a few of the hacks and tricks available over the internet tend to be a little untrustworthy. Most of them tend to do nothing at all. Ask Computers & Cellphone Repair made an extensive attempt at making it easy for our readers by checking out the tweaks on our own laptops and computers to find the best methods to speed up Internet speed. Our findings have given us the following tips and tricks.

Before proceeding to make any of the changes we have featured here, conduct a speed test with the existing settings. You can conduct another speed test after completing the tutorial so that you can find out for yourself if the issue has been solved.

Make Your WiFi Secure

Protect your WiFi signals using a password. If your WiFi is not protected, you may end up with loss of your bandwidth because someone in your neighborhood may have been using it. To do this,

  • Get into administrator area of your router. You can do this by entering the IP address assigned to your router. Typically, this looks like 198.168.1.1.

  • Get into your settings. You may need to consult the documentation that came with your router. You may search on the official website as well.

  • Set a password for your router. Make sure that it is not easily guessable. Avoid the birthdays, vehicle numbers and other such passwords that are likely to guess.

Be Plugged In

No, we do not mean to ask you to keep your laptop plugged in. Check if you can use ethernet connectivity instead of WiFi.

Yes, you heard it right. WiFi is known for speed loss while accessing the internet. Using an Ethernet connection to access the internet can improve your internet speed by 30%. There are several reasons why this loss can happen. It could be because of the antennas, either on your WiFi router or on your laptop.

Use NameBench to optimize your connection

Namebench is the free open source application from Google that helps you optimise your internet connection for a faster performance.

The application is available for Windows, Unix and OS X operating systems. It runs benchmark tests with your browser history. If you do not want to check it up with your browser history, you can choose to test it with top 2000 sites as per Alexa ranking. Once it completes the tests, it will present you a report with graphs and statistics. The report, in essence, comes up with a list of tested DNS servers according to their speed.

Once you have found the best server responses based on the DNS, you can change the DNS to get the faster browsing experience. You can change the DNS servers following the steps here below –

  • Launch Control Panel.

  • Click on Network and Internet

  • Now, click on Network and Sharing Center

  • On the left side pane, click on Change adapter settings

  • Right click on the interface that is used to connect to the Internet.

  • Click on Properties.

  • Choose Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)

  • Click on Properties

  • Click on Use the following DNS server addresses and enter the DNS server addresses you want to change to.

  • Click on OK.

Make sure you have noted down the existing DNS server addresses before making any changes. If the changes you made do not work, you may need to change it back.

Final Thoughts

The steps and tips featured above should be helpful enough to speed up your internet speed by 50%. The method involving changing DNS servers would be practically more efficient than the other. However, the exact results you get may depend upon your laptop or computer, router, the location of the server and your internet service provider.
